Audi Launched An Electric SUV Before Key Rivals

Whereas some manufacturers have opted to tread carefully with new electrical technologies, Audi has flung itself into the world of EVs, developing a comprehensive lineup with models in most segments. A key to the brand’s current success was getting its first offering onto the market before other key rivals, which Audi managed in 2019.

This was Audi’s first all-electric SUV, and it importantly launched earlier than both the BMW iX3 and Mercedes EQS. Since the e-tron’s arrival, Audi has expanded the sub-brand with a wide range of electric SUVs, ranging from the range-conscious and compact Q4 e-tron, through to the luxurious and performance-focused SQ8 Sportback e-tron.

Overview: Audi Electric SUVs In 2024

Keen to occupy a dominant position in the world of premium electric SUVs, Audi has been busy developing its range of models, resulting in no fewer than eight separate choices on the market in 2024. Importantly, this means a more diverse choice of models than any other German brand, including both BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Audi’s range kicks off with the compact Audi Q4 e-tron, which is available as both a typical SUV, and a coupe-esque SUV, dubbed the Sportback. Prices for this Audi EV kick off just shy of $50,000, at $49,800. At the other end of the spectrum, Audi offers the Q8 and SQ8 e-tron models, which are also both available as an SUV and as Sportback models. Get busy picking out options, and one of these could easily run you north of $100,000.

In between both the Q4 and Q8 e-tron SUVs, Audi has the Q6 and SQ6 e-tron, which straddle the line between the compact and midsize Audi EVs. These models present a happy medium between the cost-conscious Q4 and the indulgent Q8, with impressive performance, a premium interior, and plenty of range, too.

1 2025 Audi Q4 e-tron

Kicking things off is the Q4 e-tron, which is the cheapest of all Audi electric vehicles. Pricing starts at $49,800, which means the Q4 is your only chance of securing an e-tron Audi for less than $50,000. For this, Audi provides a 335-horsepower compact SUV that can comfortably fit five, and boasts a respectable 288-mile range. Plant your foot, and this striking SUV will power from 0 to 60 mph in just five seconds flat.

Key rivals include the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Volvo XC40 Recharge. The former is available for around $8,000 less, although it does lack the same premium reputation, and some all-important badge appeal, too. The Volvo, on the other hand, will set you back just over $3,000 more, and, while just as luxurious, lacks the dynamic aesthetic of the Q4.

2 2025 Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron

Underneath the svelte bodywork, there is really nothing to separate the Q4 Sportback e-tron from the Q4 e-tron, but that’s OK, as it’s the styling that really sets this model apart. A sloping coupe silhouette gives the Q4 a stylish and sporting finish, and although that sleek roofline intrudes on rear-passenger and trunk space, Audi feels confident in asking for an $8,400 premium for the Sportback.

The Sportback is powered by the same 335-horsepower powertrain, and while that translates to an identical five second 0 to 60 mph time, the Sportback does lose 30 miles of range against the standard Q4 e-tron. Rivals include the equally stylish Kia EV6 and Volvo’s C40 Recharge.

3 2025 Audi Q6 e-tron

Following on from the compact Q4 is Audi’s latest e-tron model, the Q6 e-tron. Currently, both the Q6 and more powerful SQ6 e-trons are only available in typical SUV formats, although Audi has confirmed that Sportback models will join the lineup in 2025.

The obvious benefit of jumping from the Q4 to this new electric Audi is the extra space available inside. However, the Q6 e-tron also packs some extra punch. Maximum output available is 456 horsepower, which provides the Q6 with an impressive 0 to 60 mph time of just 4.9 seconds. Furthermore, the larger SUV also offers up to 307 miles of range, which should help to squash any fears of range anxiety, in addition to saving time stopping off for frequent charge-ups.

4 2025 Audi SQ6 e-tron

Audi offers customers the chance to sacrifice some range of the Q6 e-tron in favor of more power, with the SQ6 model, which packs a mighty 509 horsepower when launch control is activated. That power enables the SQ6 e-tron to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, which makes this the fastest-accelerating electric SUV from the brand, beating even the SQ8 e-tron, albeit by just 0.1 of a second.

This extra power does come at a cost, but the difference isn’t as much as you might first think, as the SQ6 e-tron commands less than $10,000 more than its Q6 base. This places it in line with models such as the Mercedes EQE and Porsche Macan EV, both of which are clearly premium models that also pack a punch.

5 2024 Audi Q8 e-tron

Audi’s range of Q8 models is its most diverse electric SUV offering, with more S-designated and Sportback trims available. The entry point, though, is the $74,400 Q8 e-tron. Motivation is provided by a pair of electric motors, which kick out 402 horsepower and provide a respectable 285-mile range. That is down in comparison to the range of the cheaper Q6 e-tron, but the Q8 is both a larger and fundamentally older model, so it’s not too surprising.

One motor is placed at the front axle, and another on the rear, which means all iterations of the Q8 e-tron do have all-wheel drive – although it’s the rear motor that does most of the leg-work.

6 2024 Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron

While the Q4 e-tron Sportback loses range in comparison to the typically SUV-shaped Q4 e-tron, the opposite is true for the Q8 models, as the Sportback actually gains 15 miles of range. Also, unusually, while the Q4 e-tron Sportback commands a price premium of $8,400, the Q8 Sportback e-tron is only $3,400 more than the entry-level Q8 e-tron.

So, the 2024 Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron actually looks like good value for money, and it might therefore be the sweet spot of Audi’s luxury electric SUV range. The price of this Audi electric car is in line with the pricing of other luxury models on the market, although the Q8 is longer in the tooth than some key rivals.

7 2024 Audi SQ8 e-tron

The SQ8 e-tron models do take a hit in range, but they make up for it with a boost in power – not that the standard Q8 models are slouches, each packing 402 horsepower. However, with 496 horses on tap, the SQ8 models will be noticeably quicker, as is demonstrated by the 4.2-second 0 to 60 mph time; that’s a full 1.2 seconds faster than the Q8 trims.

Rivals for all the Q8 and SQ8 e-tron range include luxury models such as the Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model X, and BMW iX. Arguably, Audi offers the best-looking models from this bunch, and although styling is of course subjective, it’s hard to argue that the SQ8 models especially are anything other than genuinely smart-looking EVs.

8 2024 Audi SQ8 Sportback e-tron

Perched on top of Audi’s electric SUV tree is the sleek and stylish SQ8 Sportback e-tron, which commands a striking asking price of $92,600 – almost double what the entry-level Q4 e-tron would set you back. For the money, Audi will supply a well-equipped and impressively luxurious SUV, with 496 horsepower at the disposal of your right foot.

The only area in which the SQ8 e-tron really lacks is the range, which is a decidedly average 253 miles. By way of comparison, a Tesla Model X can offer you an EPA-estimated 335 miles – plus it comes in cheaper, at $79,990. However, what the Audi lacks in terms of efficiency and value for money, it certainly makes up for in terms of its style, performance and premium finish.
