Motorsport and keen track day drivers will be pleased to know the lawsuit against WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Raceway has been settled, allowing the 2024 racing and events calendar to continue unabated.
The iconic raceway was embroiled in a legal battle with residents along Highway 68, who banded together to sue the raceway over excessive noise and other disturbances. Much like the people who move near the airport and complain about the noise of planes taking off, we’re not quite sure what one expects when setting up camp near a raceway, but we digress…
At the time, disgruntled residents of the Highway 68 Coalition claimed that the number of racing events had increased compared to previous years, allegedly disturbing their peace. Per the lawsuit, additional track days and events were causing noise pollution, while “inadequate” water quality and sewage disposal had also added to the residents’ woes.
Thankfully, the opposing sides have reached a favorable settlement.
Laguna Seca To Conduct Sound Impact Assessment
As part of the settlement, Friends of Laguna Seca (in charge of managing the circuit) will carry out long-term plans that are already in place. The organization will conduct a sound impact assessment at the track and implement sound mitigation measures to appease residents in the area.
“We view this as a very favorable resolution for the County and its long-term partner at Laguna Seca, the nonprofit organization Friends of Laguna Seca,” said Nick Pasculli, County Communications Director.

Both parties expressed gratitude towards the track’s fans and the public support for the County and FLS in this lawsuit. Established in 1957, traveling to the iconic circuit has become a pilgrimage for those who worship at the altar of gasoline and horsepower. Restricting activity would likely have had negative impacts on the local economy.

The Future Of Laguna Seca
“FLS is pleased that the litigation was dealt with quickly, and we’re looking forward to our next steps towards Laguna Seca’s long-term success for the benefit of the community of Monterey County and the entire racing world,” said FLS President Ross Merrill. “We know these improvements will take time, but we are committed to ensuring the success of Laguna Seca for decades to come.”
While racetracks may not be essential to some people, they play a vital role in road safety. Providing gearheads with a safe environment to drive fast and enjoy their vehicles means they’re less likely to engage in reckless behavior. This has been a concern in several regions, as drag strips are closing down across the country.
Bruce Canepa, the Vice President of FLS, said he wants to see Laguna Seca preserved for future generations and aims to do so through the nonprofit. “[We want] to make Laguna Seca the place we’ve always hoped it could be.”
