All The Cars Powered By Stellantis’ New Twin-Turbo I6

In an effort to meet more rigorous emission and fuel economy standards, many car manufacturers are exploring downsized powertrains in their lineups. The downsizing trend of engines has also extended to large trucks, SUVs, and some select muscle cars. Traditionally powered by big displacement V8 engines, more of these cars have smaller six-cylinder mills. One such example is the new ‘Hurricane’ six-cylinder engine found in Dodge, Ram, and other Stellantis products. Available in more than one output, this engine is suitable for various applications, much in the way the B58 six-pot from BMW has found its way into everything from the 1 Series to the 7 Series. In this feature, we will discuss the history and specifications of the Hurricane engine (in both standard and high-output versions), some of its selling points, and the current or future models in the Stellantis lineup that use this impressive engine.

Hurricane Engine History And Specs

Stellantis

The Hurricane series of engines is a new family of twin-turbocharged, inline six-cylinder engines, released by Stellantis in 2022. It was developed from the ground up by Stellantis engineers to deliver maximum the power outputs of a V8, but with superior efficiency and lower emissions.

Notable features of the Hurricane engine include the following:

  • Two low-inertia, high-flow turbochargers
  • High-pressure direct fuel injection
  • Deck plating of the block for a cylinder bore shape that enhances efficiency
  • High-flow ball-valve thermostat

The Hurricane engine is available in two specifications: Standard Output and High Output. The Standard Output Hurricane motor is intended to be used by the majority of models across the Stellantis brand umbrella, such as Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler, to name a few. On the other hand, the High-Output Hurricane engine is expected to primarily be utilized by high-performance, top-grade models within the Stellantis brand umbrella. This could potentially include future Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep SRT models, as well as certain high-performance-oriented Ram truck models.

Standard Output versions of the 3.0-liter Hurricane engine are rated at more than 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, while High Output versions are rated at more than 500 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. Note that true horsepower and torque figures do vary based on several factors. This includes which model the engine is featured in and the drivetrain.

Hurricane Engine Specifications

Engine Type

3.0 liter twin-turbocharged inline-six-cylinder

Power Outputs

~ 400 hp, 450 lb-ft (Standard Output)

Up to 540 hp, 521 lb-ft (High Output, Ram 1500)

MPG (combined)

21 mpg (2025 Ram 1500, Standard Output, RWD)

Below are a few highlighted models within Stellantis’s current model range that already feature or will feature the Hurricane engine as a powertrain option. We’ll update this list as more models with the Hurricane engine become available.

Dodge Charger (2025)

The all-new Dodge Charger for the 2025 model year will be coming in both electric (pictured above) and ICE versions. One of the featured powertrains is the Hurricane engine. The 3.0L Hurricane inline i6 replaces the Pentastar V6, as well as the signature 5.7L and 6.4L HEMI V8s used by preceding Charger generations.

Dodge is aiming for the Hurricane engine specs to make up for the loss of the brand’s famous HEMI V8 in the new Charger. The Hurricane twin-turbo will power the two-door Charger SixPack H.O. (High Output), as well as the four-door Charger SixPack S.O. (Standard Output).

As the model names suggest, both of these Charger models will be powered by either a Standard or High Output 3.0L Hurricane engine. Charger SixPack S.O. models will push out around 420 hp, while SixPack H.O. models will increase it to around 550 hp.

First released for the 2022 model year, the fourth-generation Jeep Wagoneer is a revival of a previously retired Jeep nameplate that has not been used since the mid 1990s. The Wagoneer is a full-size, premium SUV within Jeep’s current lineup slotted above the Grand Cherokee. The Wagoneer L is a long-wheelbase version of the Wagoneer, while the Grand Wagoneer is an even more upscale version, and both use the Hurricane engine as well.

The 3.0L Hurricane engine was introduced on the Wagoneer for the 2023 model year, and as of 2024, was equipped as standard across the lineup. The Hurricane inline-six also powers the long-wheelbase Wagoneer L, and the more premium Grand Wagoneer. Depending on which model grade is chosen, power output for the Wagoneer ranges from around 420 hp to 510 hp.

The revised Ram 1500 for the 2025 model year is also the first Ram truck to receive the Hurricane twin-turbo engine.

The Hurricane motor replaces previous Stellantis engines that have been utilized by the Ram for many years, including the 5.7L HEMI V8 engine. When equipped with the Hurricane six-cylinder, the Ram 1500 proves to be more capable compared to preceding models with the older Stellantis engines. The High Output version in the 2025 Ram 1500 produces 540 hp and 521 lb-ft, compared to the 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of the V8 in the 2024 Ram 1500. The Standard Output Hurricane is no slouch, with 420 hp and 469 lb-ft.

Is The 3.0L Hurricane A Good Engine?

The 3.0L Hurricane series of engines offer a lot of potential for their size. While the Hurricane engine is smaller in size compared to the preceding Pentasar V6 or famous HEMI-series V8 engines, the Hurricane offers equal, if not more, power and torque. We’ll have to wait a while longer to determine how reliable the Hurricane engine is, since it hasn’t been around for all that long.

Is The Hurricane Engine Better Than The HEMI?

Prior to the Hurricane engine, the Stellantis signature power plant was the HEMI V8 engine – available in both naturally aspirated and supercharged form, as well as ranging in displacement size from 5.7 liters to 6.4 liters.

The Hurricane engine family aims to offer the same levels of power output and performance the HEMI V8 engines were able to produce but in a more efficient, smaller displacement package, which it achieves.

In addition, the Hurricane engines are engineered to be as ‘futureproof’ as possible. One key argument for Stellantis retiring the HEMI engines was that its current design and engineering would prove difficult to upgrade further, to meet more rigorous industry requirements. Subjectively, many people will always prefer the character of the older V8, but the new Hurricane is very smooth and refined.

How Much Horsepower Does The Hurricane Engine Offer?

The Hurricane engine is currently offered in two variants – a Standard Output (SO) variant, as well as a High Output (HO) variant. Both are 3.0L twin-turbocharged inline-six cylinders but differ in overall horsepower outputs.

The Standard Output engine produces more than 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. The High Output engine on the other hand, reportedly produces more than 500 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. In the Ram 1500, the engine makes up to 540 hp. In addition, both Hurricane engines feature unique turbocharger designs that vary in boost and pressure output. The Standard Output delivers peak turbocharger boost at around 22.4 PSI, whereas the High Output delivers slightly more boost at around 26.0 PSI.

The High Output engine also requires premium gasoline. The Standard Output engine has been engineered to run on regular unleaded gasoline but is recommended to run on premium for maximum power output.
