Bateman Horne Center advances ME/CFS and long COVID care
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, BHC has made significant strides in addressing chronic health challenges that affect millions of people globally.
In recognition of the critical role of medical education in improving patient care, the Open Medicine Foundation (OMF) partnered with BHC in 2022 to create the OMF-supported Medical Education Resource Center (MERC). Now celebrating its second year on August 1, MERC has been at the forefront of clinical care, physician and patient education, and research in ME/CFS.
MERC’s impact on medical education and patient care
Through MERC, BHC offers evidence-based training to enhance the diagnosis, management, and personalized care of these complex conditions. The recent MERC report highlights two years of pivotal work, including collaborations with the University of Utah Health on educational series for healthcare professionals, accredited CME (continuing medical education) programs, Grand Rounds with collegiate institutions like Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, and in-person residencies and fellowships with prestigious academic centers such as the Mayo Clinic.
MERC’s curriculum aims to equip primary care providers and specialists with the necessary skills to manage ME/CFS and long COVID effectively. The program advocates for formalized medical education to be included in textbooks, board exams, and as a regulatory requirement for continuous professional development, setting a new standard of care. Earlier diagnosis and improved management of conditions like ME/CFS and long COVID are at the heart of BHC’s mission through the MERC program.
