Nothing is more stressful than spilling a cup of tea or watching in horror as a child tips orange juice onto a carpet, as these stains seem impossible to clean.
Carpet fibres are designed to trap dirt and moisture, which, unfortunately, means they absorb liquid stains quickly. Thus, simply scrubbing the surface will not get the carpet clean again.
Luckily, Myriam Sandler, a cleaning expert and founder of Mother Could, has shared that removing carpet stains can be easy if you use the right products.
First, try to absorb as much moisture as possible, no matter the stain. Blot the stain gently so you do not press the stain surface into the carpet.
Myriam said: “Once you’ve gotten up as much as you can, put some white vinegar directly onto the stain and use a bristle brush to scrub the area.
“If you’re not seeing the results you hoped for, squeeze some lemon juice onto the stain, add a little bit more white vinegar, and scrub away.”
White vinegar contains acetic acid, which can break down many common alkaline stains, such as coffee, tea, sugary juice stains, and even pet urine.
Lemon juice is also acidic, and when combined with white vinegar, it is very effective at helping to remove tough stains such as red wine.
What is fantastic about lemon juice is that it can also help remove greasy stains from carpets such as food, but you must combine it with washing up liquid and baking soda.
Myriam said: “Dawn dish soap is all-powerful regarding oil-based stains. So, on that note, heavily apply the dish soap onto the stain and scrub it in well.
“After you’ve scrubbed in the soap, generously sprinkle baking soda on the area, and then top it with some lemon or lime juice.”
If the washing-up liquid, baking soda, and lemon juice begin to foam, they are working to get rid of the messy stain.
Then, all you have to do is use a sponge to work the mixture into the carpet and spray it with water once you have finished scrubbing.
Use a clean cloth to dry the carpet as much as possible, and once it is damp, your carpet should be completely clean once again.
This works because washing up liquid has been designed to cut through grease and oil. Baking soda is very absorbent, so it will lift any trapped moisture, and lemon juice will break down the stain.
Washing up liquid, baking soda, and lemon juice are the best cleaning solutions for food carpet stains. It is particularly good at getting rid of tomato, curry, and chocolate stains, which tend to be tough to remove.
