Dunelm lamp looks like designer brand – but it’s only £35
With summer here, I’ve been on the hunt for stylish, cordless lamps to elevate my outdoor setup while we enjoy the warmer weather. One of the perks of a cordless lamp is that you can take it outside without worrying about ugly extension cables or having to plug it in, making it perfect for late evenings relaxing in the garden with a drink in hand.
I was on the hunt for something durable enough to live on the patio but versatile enough to come inside once the season changes. I kept seeing the Scoon Rechargeable Table Lamp from Pooky pop up on Instagram, and while it’s gorgeous, at £82, I couldn’t quite justify the splurge for a light that we might only use for part of the year.
Then, I spotted Dunelm’s Eglo Cabozo Rechargeable LED Table Lamp, which has some noticeably similar characteristics to the Pooky lamp, but for just £35. Both lamps have a long, sleek stand, white colour, touch dimmer and and wipe-clean finish. However, at a whopping £47 less, it’s an easy update on a budget.
The Cabozo from Dunelm is slightly bigger, measuring 37cm tall and with an 11cm wide base, compared to Scoon’s, which is 32cm in height and has a 10cm wide base. Like the Scoon, the Dunelm lamp is rechargeable and completely cordless.
Both brands claim the lamps are made for indoor and outdoor use, but the Cabozo description specifically states they have an IP44 rating, which means they can withstand some rainfall. However, you might want to bring them inside in particularly bad weather.
The Pooky light doesn’t clarify whether it is waterproof. Both of the lamps have integrated LED bulbs, so there shouldn’t be any gaps or holes where water could get in and ruin the circuits. If in doubt, it would probably be best to bring the lamps inside when not being used.
One key difference between the two lamps, though, is the colour of the LEDs. The Pooky bulb is a bright white, it’s dimmable and has three levels of brightness. However, the Cabozo goes a step further with colour-changing LEDs, meaning you can adjust the lighting to match your mood — warm to cool white.
Both lamps charge using a USB cable. The Scoon specifies that its battery takes eight hours from empty to fully charged and can last between eight and 10 hours.
While the Dunelm website doesn’t share details about battery life, I did some digging and contacted Eglo to check. A spokesperson for the brand confirmed the battery should take between one and three hours to fully charge. They also stated the lamp would work for eight to 10 hours on a single charge.
Aesthetically, I think the Scoon is a touch more minimalist than the Cabozo due to its compact trapezoid shape lampshade and smooth finish. Dunelm’s version has a longer, more traditional lampshade shape, which is textured to give a slightly scalloped edge.
Reviews of the Pooky lamp (which also comes in what the brand calls a “wee” size, measuring just 23.5cm tall and costing £74) describe it as “solid, weighty and well-made,” with one buyer praising the “elegant design and ease of use”. Meanwhile, the Cabozo has its own fans. One Dunelm shopper wrote: “Perfect lamps for the garden and the summer house.”
There are a few differences worth noting, though. The Pooky model is made from iron and acrylic and comes in multiple finishes and colours (including brass and matte white). One reviewer on the Pooky website described it as “solid, weighty and well-made”.
The Cabozo is made of plastic and currently only comes in two colours—black or white. A shopper said: “Perfect lamps for the garden and the summer house.”
Both lamps are designed to detach easily from their base for simple charging and can be wiped clean with a soft cloth.
