Almost everyone is familiar with heavy-hitting high-performance divisions in the automotive sector, such as Mercedes-AMG and BMW. Not so many folks know about the Genesis Magma Division. This sub-brand is Hyundai’s answer to those dominant brands and is a project that could even redefine the idea of what luxury driving should be for the American enthusiast.

The bosses of the Magma Division are really ambitious, with a host of concepts and specials on their horizon, but very little that seems to be cast in stone. Here’s what you need to know about Genesis Magma.

Genesis Magma Revealed

The Genesis Magma Division first surfaced during a press launch in New York in March 2024. The company’s marketing team decided to name the division after the raw molten energy of magma to evoke the idea that Genesis’ high-performance models could be just as impressive as all those competitors. In essence, the sub-brand aims to create a performance variant for every Genesis model in the current lineup, including the G70 sedan, GV80 crossover, and all-electric GV60. During development, all these concepts and specials will carry the company’s signature magma orange color.

Key Vehicles in the Lineup

The GV60 Magma concept, the division’s flagship, is almost ready to roll, and it could potentially reach US dealerships in 2026. The model is likely to feature advanced aerodynamics and a premium interior spread, as well as the latest electric powertrain. This crossover will sit on the GV60’s E-GMP platform, which is the same base as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and the Kia EV6 GT. Although unconfirmed, expect the GV60 Magma concept to exceed the standard car’s 430 hp comfortably and have an extended range of more than 300 miles in real-world conditions. It also has a lower center of gravity, aerodynamic air curtains, and 21-inch forged alloy wheels, and inside, you’ll find orange bucket seats, Nappa leather, and double diamond quilting.

The G80 Magma special is only likely to appear as a very rare and presumably expensive design exercise in the Middle East. This vehicle should feature lowered suspension and a wide-body design with additional aerodynamic enhancements. Still, it’s not clear if Genesis will roll it out to US consumers in the future.

The electrified G80 Magma concept is an electric sports sedan with a long wheelbase, rear diffuser, and 21-inch wheels. People first got to see it at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, and, for some reason, this one moves away from that branded orange to offer an exclusive blue hue instead.

The X Grand Berlinetta and X Grand Racer concepts appear in the latest version of the Gran Turismo video game. These are certainly futuristic coupes, and although they’re virtual concepts, they may give hints about the future direction of Genesis and Magma. Meanwhile, the Track Taxi G70 could be the basis for a next-generation sporty sedan, but currently, it does what it says on the tin and is only available for racetrack rides.

Of all the above, the GV60 Magma is the one that should excite US consumers the most. However, some estimates put the price point between $70,000 and $90,000, which is much more than the $60,000 tag for the standard GV60.

The Vision Behind Magma

Since it first appeared in US showrooms, the Genesis brand has developed a good reputation. In fact, it came out on top of the 2024 JD Power Customer Satisfaction index for premium brands, so consumers have every right to look forward to its Magma potential. Could the GV60 Magma be a powerful Tesla rival with an electric powertrain that should appeal to eco-conscious buyers? Or could the GV60 Magma offer you BMW M3-level dynamics at a much lower cost?

Genesis says that its Magma vehicles are all part of its “son-nim” approach to hospitality. This word roughly translates to an “honored guest” and reflects traditional Korean hospitality, where hosts treat individuals with the utmost respect, care, and comfort. Apparently, the company is trying to dial that philosophy into all its vehicles to create an emotional bond between the driver and the car. In each case, designers aim to balance raw power with refined aesthetics, such as the upscale interiors shown in the electrified G80 concept.

Magma vehicles will also have cutting-edge technology, upgraded motor systems, and state-of-the-art batteries, promoting quicker acceleration and extended range. Consumers can also expect advanced aerodynamics, such as rear diffusers and air curtains, to improve stability at higher speeds, while inside, high-tech blends with luxury. Meanwhile, Genesis has partnered with motorsport and performance experts to generate as much credibility as possible. For example, the racing legend Jackie Ickx was a consultant for the GV60 Magma project.

Magma’s Motorsport Ambitions

Hyundai already has some successful motorsport divisions participating in the World Rally Championship and elsewhere, and Magma is about to join the party. With this in mind, the company launched Genesis Magma Racing in December 2024, and its initial goal is to focus on the GMR-001. This hypercar should compete in global endurance races and, while it will never be street legal, its hybrid tech and aerodynamic innovations could trickle down to production models. For example, some of the advanced aerodynamics from the GMR-001 could benefit the GV60 Magma’s handling, while hybrid tech may grace some of the company’s future sedans, such as the G80 Magma. And remember, this is a motorsport-to-street car philosophy that is certainly not new, as companies like Porsche and Ferrari have adopted this approach to great effect over the years. Meanwhile, the GV60 Magma has already won an award at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed, so the company is doing something right.

What’s on the Horizon for Magma in the US?

Genesis will extend Magma variants across its full lineup, but the GV60 Magma will be the front-runner. However, it remains to be seen if there will even be a G70 Magma, as there is currently a lot of uncertainty about the base model’s potential future. Nevertheless, we are almost certain to see a lot of activity at top auto shows like New York and Los Angeles, as the overall project gathers steam.

Meanwhile, Genesis and Magma face a competitive landscape as they go up against the dominant German brands in the performance sector and Tesla’s lead in electric performance. But still, Genesis’ reputation for reliability, value, and innovation may eventually give Magma a crucial edge. Its focus on electric and hybrid performance powertrains also aligns with the industry’s overarching sustainability shift.

There’s understandably a lot of excitement around the new Magma Division from Genesis and the potential for vehicles that blend electric dynamics with Korean-inspired design, cutting-edge tech, and luxury interiors. However, all we can see in the real world at the moment is the GMR-001 hypercar (within the motorsport arena) and the GV60 Magma, which is getting close to production. Will Magma challenge the status quo and provide sustainable, value-driven cars that could rival those big European giants? Either way, it remains to be seen if this sub-brand will erupt with the same force as its marketing department would like you to believe.
