A full-sized coupe based on the Genesis G90 sedan, a sort of competitor to the Mercedes-Benz SL and S-Class coupes that no longer exist, is more than just a dream. At the New York International Auto Show earlier this week, Genesis showed exactly that in the form of the X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concept cars.

The brand’s COO and designer extraordinaire, Luc Donckerwolke, said he wants to make the cars a reality, which is something he told us in Korea last month already. But now, he’s indicated when we’ll have a definitive answer, and it seems we’ll know by the end of the year.

Starting With The G90 Helps Make It Possible

First, a little recap. It’s partly because of and not despite that full-sized sedan starting point that a G90 Coupe could exist. At a press conference at the show, Donckerwolke repeated that the concept cars were real prototypes. Not mockups meant to roll around and sit at a display, but real cars with an unmodified G90 sedan platform underneath.

Because it’s the same platform, Genesis can save a ton of cash on development, tooling, and assembly versus making it a separate car. It only has to spend on the new body panels.

“After having tried EV coupes and convertibles, we realized that people were not ready yet,” Donckerwolke said. “So we said, ‘Okay, let’s take an existing platform and make a coupe out of it,’ And we noticed that there was no compromise to be made in the design and in the desirability of the product by taking the platform of the G90.”

So what does it take to come to reality, and when will we know? It sounds like we won’t have to wait much longer; the company will measure demand based on further responses to the concept, particularly at the show here in New York, but the signs are already good, says Donckerwolke:

“I’m very positive, and in the next months, we’ll show the potential of the demand we will get from the markets, and I hope we’ll have good news very soon. But you can believe that I will not let that go.”

G90 Coupe Could Be Longer Than Spectre

At 215 inches in length, the Long Wheelbase G90 would make for a heck of a coupe. It would be slightly longer than the Rolls-Royce Spectre. It would also be longer than James Bond film Spectre, which had a run-time of 148 minutes. This 70s-style land yacht could end up as the largest coupe currently on the market.

Which could be exactly what the brand needs. A way to show that it truly is a luxury contender by producing one of the most extravagant models around. A two-door car that’s half a foot longer than a Ford Expedition.

On the X Gran Coupe concept, Genesis showed off a new level of luxury inside. Chrome-free and with leather tanned using the products of olive oil production, it also came with an olive wood veneer that held microperforations to allow accent lighting to shine through.

We’re not sure if the world is ready for a gigantic Genesis coupe, even if it comes with 409 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque from a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. But our eyes are certainly ready for it. So, Genesis, bring it on.
