How to get rid of washing machine mould with just 2 ingredients
Washing machines are one of the hardest-working appliances in the home, so it’s important to take good care of them. Being dark and humid environments, it means they are a breeding ground for mould, especially around the rubber seal.
This mould can quickly build up if it’s not cleaned, resulting in musty-smelling clothes—even after they have just been washed. However, there’s a simple way to banish this problem fast, and you only need two cupboard staples to do so. Chantel Mila, who often shares cleaning hacks with her millions of followers online, says this is the ‘trick’ to keeping mould away.
Taking to TikTok, the pro recently shared a helpful tutorial on how to deep-clean your washing machine—which should be done frequently to keep it free from mould.
If your appliance needs some TLC, all you need to make it look as good as new again is white vinegar and tea tree oil.
Explaining in the video’s caption, Chantel said: “If your clothes are smelling musty, your washing machine may be the culprit. This method is so easy to do and leaves your clothes smelling so fresh.”
How to get rid of washing machine mould
First, you’ll need to make your cleaning solution by mixing together one cup of white vinegar and 20 drops of either tea tree or clove oil.
Then, it’s time to tackle the biggest culprit—the washing machine seal. Soak a few cloths in the cleaning mixture and stuff them between the gaps, leaving them to get to work while you tackle the rest of the appliance.
Next, take a large bowl or basin and position it underneath the washing machine’s drain, which is usually on the bottom right corner. Unscrew the gap to release the stagnant water, and clear out any debris that might have got stuck there.
At this point, you can also take out the detergent drawer and give it a quick scrub with warm, soapy water to remove any build-up of product.
By now, the cloths in the sealant should have soaked for long enough to get rid of any stubborn mould spores. Take them out and use another clean cloth to give the rubber a quick wipe down. This should remove any final mould spots, leaving it looking brand new.
Finally, run a normal wash cycle with one cup of white vinegar in the detergent drawer to blast any mould from inside the drum, and your appliance will be sparkling once again.
