The popularity of the crossover and SUV in the United States isn’t slowing down. Offering more space, practicality, and an improved ride height to jump off the tarmac, crossovers have grown to be a leading segment for growing families. When it comes to building reliable crossovers, Japan is right up there with homegrown cars, selling some of the most popular models in the world – and the USA. Most notably, one model even outsold the Ford F-150 in 2024.

Toyota’s RAV4 is a clear favorite, yet the Japanese brands are progressively facing domestic rivalry. We previously compared the new RAV4 to the Nissan Rogue; now let’s do the same for the new Mazda CX-5 – another crossover we can’t praise highly enough. So, which is the winner for the complete crossover package in the Mazda CX-5 vs. Toyota RAV4 showdown?

Design: Elegance vs. Ruggedness

“Why fix something if it isn’t broken?” This saying may be applied to both the Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-5 in terms of exterior deisgn, since both have been around for some time without a massive change in appearance. Being almost identical in terms of dimensions, there’s not much difference in size, but there is a difference in their design language: the Mazda CX-5 is slightly more elegant in its lines, with curves as opposed to the RAV4’s hardy, sturdy stance. The RAV4 has been progressively designed to follow a more utilitarian design language, aimed at more versatile driving.

Looking further at its trim levels, Mazda clearly aims for a more ‘urban-centric’ approach, or rather what it refers to as its KODO design language. This makes the CX-5 more premium-looking, compared to its compatriot. By contrast, the RAV4’s trim levels include more adventurous options, which the CX-5 doesn’t offer.

In its entry-level guise, both the Mazda CX-5 2.5S and the Toyota RAV4 LE come standard with 17-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights with High Beam Control. However, the Mazda is one up in its base spec as its wheels will be a combination of aluminum and alloy, whilst automatic rain-sensing wiper blades are also standard. Upgrade to the flagship CX-5 2.5 Turbo Signature model, and you’ll get more exterior features such as larger 19-inch wheels, a cleaner and more premium rounded silver-finished bumper trim, and a gunmetal front grille.

A mere $200 separates the flagship models of both ranges, with the RAV4 Hybrid Limited equally wearing 19-inch alloy wheels, a tilt-and-slide moonroof, heated side mirrors, and dual chrome-tipped exhaust pipes. In contrast to the CX-5 range, the rain-sensing wipers will be optional for higher-specification models.

Interior: Premium Vs. Somewhat Rugged

Both models offer a good quality interior – and in higher trims, even belies its mainstream pricing. There is enough seating for five, with fabric upholstery as standard in both base models. Mazda’s minimalist-yet-tech-forward design philosophy is echoed in the dashboard desing; even base models get a leather-stitched steering wheel and 10.25-inch full-color touchscreen for the multimedia.

In a comparison of the base RAV4 and Mazda CX-5, the difference is clear: entry-level models comes with an eight-inch touchscreen, which are immediately less impressive than the CX-5. Pay a bit more, and the RAV4 range will bring more than the Mazda, though, with a 10.5-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital cluster. The best the CX-5 offers is a seven-inch LCD cluster. Both cars offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but Toyota makes it standard on all models, while Mazda wants you to opt for a higher trim to get that privilege.

As with the exterior dimensions of the CX5 vs. RAV4, very little separates the interior dimensions of these two vehicles. Where the RAV4 might lag in overall seating positioning and space, the CX-5 loses out in terms of available cargo volume. Yet, even though the Toyota RAV4 vs. Mazda CX-5 show that the latter might be shorter in terms of legroom, both models can comfortably accommodate adults in the rear.

Performance: Fuel Efficiency Vs. More Instant Power

​​​​​​Neither model can be called performance-focused, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t tendencies and skills imparted into each of these models, easily seen in the differences between them.

Similarities include the fact that all-wheel is drive is available in both lineups, but only the RAV4 offers a hybrid option at this point – and, that said, two types of hybrid at that. The RAV4’s plug-in hybrid offering (previously known as the Prime) has the benefit of an all-electric range and can be recharged overnight – it’s also the most potent in the lineup. The CX-5 only has non-hybrid powertrains, although that is something we hope the future models bring to market.

The CX-5’s elegant appearance also suits the engine options on offer: base models have a 187-hp engine, while turbocharged upper-tier models come with as much as 256 hp (with 93 Octane fuel). Neither is particularly sporty, but it does step up to near premium levels of performance for the segment.

Where the RAV4 differentiates itself from the CX-5 is in its more rugged trim options – the Woodland Edition, for example, is suitable for light off-roading duty. The CX-5 range doesn’t offer anything similar.

2025 Toyota RAV4 Vs. 2025 Mazda CX-5: Powertrain Specs

The RAV4 lineup offers much choice, with even the base ICE model being more potent than the base CX-5; however, with a turbocharged engine in the upper trims, the CX-5 offers as much as 256 hp (with premium fuel) which is better than even the hybrid RAV4. The winner, however, is the PHEV version of the RAV4, with 302 combined hp on tap, the quickest sprint time, and the most capacity to tow. To sweeten that deal, it also offers the second-best gas mileage of all.

Safety Figures

Both models are highly ranked when it comes to safety. Scores for the 2025 Mazda CX-5 look as follows:

• IIHS: Three ratings of Good, with base headlights earning Acceptable. The basic safety suite is a little lacking, getting a Poor score.
• NHTSA: Full marks for Overall Rating, Frontal Crash tests, and Side Crash tests. Rollover scores are four out of five.

Let’s compare that to how the RAV4 scores (note, all three models score the same):

• IIHS: One Good rating, Marginal for Moderate overlap front, and Acceptable for the updated Side crash test. The standard safety suite scores Acceptable.
• NHTSA: Full marks for Overall Rating and Side Crash tests. Frontal Crash evaluations and Rollover scores are four out of five.

It’s also worth noting that when it comes to reliability of the Mazda CX-5 vs. Toyota RAV4, both have excellent reputations for dependability.

Pricing and Conclusion: A Difficult Choice To Make

Both the RAV4 and CX-5 are segment leaders when it comes to the compact SUV class. Whilst the base RAV4 is slightly more expensive at the entry-point to the range, it does offer more variety, thanks to offering a hybrid and plug-in hybrid variant. The most expensive ICE RAV4 you can get in 2025 is the Limited trim, which has a base MSRP of $37,555. By contrast, the CX-5’s top trim starts at $40,800.

In the RAV4 lineup, the hybrids are more expensive, and you can spend over $48k on a top-end model with the plug-in hybrid powertrain. The trade-off is more power and excellent fuel efficiency.

When it comes to deciding whether you want the Toyota RAV4 or the Mazda CX-5, the choice will come down to what you want to get from your crossover and what your priorities are. Drivers seeking a smooth, upscale experience with elegant styling may gravitate toward the CX-5. At the same time, those who value versatility, off-road capability, and a broader range of configurations – including proven hybrid options – will likely prefer the RAV4. Both SUVs deliver strong value and performance within their class, ensuring that buyers will find a compelling option regardless of which path they take.
