Midsize pickup trucks are an increasingly popular segment, with a growing number of consumers choosing a pickup instead of a car when buying an everyday family vehicle. There are a number of midsize trucks currently available on the market; this article ranks them according to their J.D. Power resale rating.

One of the metrics used by J.D. Power to rank a vehicle (alongside scores for quality & reliability, driving experience, and dealership experience), the resale rating is a forecast of the vehicle’s depreciation (how much of its value it’s likely to lose) over the course of the next three years. While a lower depreciation equals a higher score, a higher depreciation results in a lower score. Here is every midsize pickup truck on sale for the 2024 model year, ranked by J.D. Power Resale Rating, from the lowest to the highest.

8 Rivian R1T

J.D. Power Resale Rating: N/A

The first truck on the list, the Rivian R1T, is also the newest, having been introduced to the market in 2022. It does not have a resale rating, which lands it at the bottom of the list. This is partially thanks to the difficulty of determining a resale rating for a small-scale production vehicle, as there are comparatively few Rivians on the road and the model hasn’t been around for very long.

The R1T is a futuristic, all-electric pickup truck, with a distinct design that sets itself apart thanks to its uniquely-shaped headlights. It has recently received an update. The second generation of both the R1T and its SUV sibling, the R1S, were revealed at the same time. A wide range of powertrains is available, from a dual-motor variant to a quad-motor variant with a power output that breaks the four-figure barrier. Despite not much data being available regarding the R1T, including its reliability record, owners generally report a high level of satisfaction with their vehicle.

7 Nissan Frontier

J.D. Power Resale Rating: N/A (2023 model: 84/100)

Like most models on the list, the Nissan Frontier does not yet have a J.D. Power resale rating for the current model year. However, there is a rating available for the 2023 Frontier, which belongs to the same generation. The current generation of the Frontier was introduced for the 2022 model year, and is the first dedicated Frontier model for the North American market. Previous generations of the model had been rebadged versions of the Navara, sharing most of their mechanical components with the global model.

The Frontier has an excellent reliability record, with the 2019 model having the best reliability record out of any midsize pickup truck on sale over the past decade. The current Frontier enjoys a similar track record to its predecessor; with a short list of issues and a reputation for reliability and quality, it is highly likely to hold onto its value going forward.

6 Chevrolet Colorado

J.D. Power Resale Rating: N/A (2022 model: 85/100)

The Chevrolet Colorado may share almost every mechanical component with its GMC counterpart, the Canyon, but its resale score is much lower. As is the case with the Canyon, there is no score for 2024, with 2022 (the last model year for the previous generation) being the most recent year to be assigned one. The Colorado and Canyon’s third generation began in 2023, and has been doing fairly well so far with no major issues or urgent recalls. The 2024 model brought one major update in the form of the Bison package, which was created in collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) and adds a host of off-roading equipment including upgraded dampers and 35-inch mud-terrain tires.

5 Jeep Gladiator

J.D. Power Resale Rating: N/A (2023 model: 88/100)

The Jeep Gladiator is another model that hasn’t been on the market for very long, having been introduced for the 2020 model year (although its name does recall a much older model, the classic Gladiator produced between 1962 and 1988). Aside from its nameplate’s historical association, the Gladiator has another claim to fame: it’s the first pickup truck produced by Jeep in nearly thirty years, the last one having been the Comanche, which went out of production in 1992. Last year’s model had a good resale rating, and the model as a whole enjoys a good reputation for reliability, with the 2024 Gladiator having no recalls or complaints associated with it.

4 Ford Ranger

J.D. Power Resale Rating: N/A (2023 model: 90/100)

While the current version of the Ford Ranger, which marks the start of the model’s sixth generation, does not have a resale rating of its own, the 2023 model, the last from the fifth-gen Ranger, has a very high resale rating, indicating the Ranger holds onto its value very well. The Ranger is one of the best-selling midsize trucks on the US market, enjoying Ford’s brand reputation as well as the weight of a long-standing nameplate that has been around for decades.

The Ranger also enjoys a good reliability record, which contributes to its high resale value. The current model looks like it will follow in the footsteps of its predecessor. Having been out on the market for months now, it still has no NHTSA recalls or complaints to its name, indicating depreciation is likely to be slow as 2024 Rangers maintain their quality and reliability over future years.

3 GMC Canyon

J.D. Power Resale Rating: N/A (2022 model: 92/100)

The near-identical mechanical sibling of the Colorado, the GMC Canyon does, however, have a higher resale rating than its Chevrolet counterpart. In both cases, the score applies to the 2022 model as there is no more recent rating available.

The Canyon enjoys good reliability, with a few minor issues that mirror the ones experienced by the Colorado; however, being one of the first few models in a new generation, it may be prone to teething issues. Despite this, it still scores very high on the resale rating front, only earning a spot in third place as its score does not apply to the current year; when taking into account the rating regardless of model year, the Canyon lands in second place.

2 Honda Ridgeline

J.D. Power Resale Rating: 87/100

One of two vehicles that has been assigned a J.D. Power resale rating for the current model year, the Honda Ridgeline is also the oldest vehicle on the list; its second and current generation has been on the market since 2017. The 2024 model has received minor updates, the biggest one being the addition of an offroading-oriented “TrailSport” trim. The Ridgeline also has the unique characteristic of being a unibody vehicle, blending the line between pickup truck and SUV.

While the first five years of the current generation experienced some reliability issues, including a high number of recalls and complaints, things improved rapidly after 2021, and subsequent model years enjoyed a much better reputation, which could be one of the reasons behind its currently high resale score.

1 Toyota Tacoma

J.D. Power Resale Rating: 96/100

The top scorer is also one of the best-selling pickup trucks on the market, the Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma enjoys a great track record all around when it comes to ownership experience, reliability and quality. The current version of the Tacoma is the first of the model’s fourth generation; despite only having been on sale for less than a year, it already continues to carry on the model’s excellent reputation and is predicted to keep most of its value, hence the very high resale rating.

It will be interesting to see whether the Tacoma will hold on to the top spot considering the all-new ‘Taco’s high-profile reliability issues.
