Nissan isn’t exactly trouncing its rivals on the sales charts, but there is one segment where the brand will have Toyota zeeing red. Nissan’s sports coupe, the Nissan Z, has managed to outsell the Toyota GR Supra in 2024. It’s the first time the Z has outsold the modern Supra, and a sign that it might be time for Toyota to make some big changes to its own sports car.

Nissan Z Climbs Over GR Supra In Just Its Second Year
Toyota brought the Supra back just as the old Nissan 370Z was falling off a cliff. Dropping from more than 7,000 per year from 2010-2015, the Z dropped to just 2,384 in 2019. That same year, Toyota’s fresh new car sold 2,884 units. The 370Z was killed off in 2020, selling 1,955 copies to Toyota’s 5,887.
The Supra sold well in 2021, hitting 6,830 units before beginning its own decline. 2022 saw just 4,952 cars sold in the US, and even though Toyota announced a six-speed stick for 2023, sales dropped to 2,652.

Nissan launched its new 3.0-liter twin-turbo Z with retro styling in 2022, but parts delays pushed it back to almost the end of the year. In 2023, its first real year on sale, the Z sold 1,771 copies to Toyota’s 2,652.
For 2024, the Nissan’s sales continued to pick up. Nissan moved 3,164 copies of the latest Z, while Toyota sales stayed flat at 2,615.
Toyota’s Solution? Make The Supra 10 Grand More Expensive
What’s moving the Z over the Supra? You might think it’s the price tag since the 2024 Nissan Z’s $42,970’s starting MSRP was nearly $3,500 less than Toyota’s. Strangely, Toyota doesn’t seem to think that’s an issue because for 2025, it raised the starting price by $9,800.
It’s how Toyota did that that gives us some insight.

Toyota GR Supra’s Final Goodbye Teaches Nissan Z Nismo A Lesson In How To Build A Sports Car
The final version of the Supra has made its debut, and it puts the Nissan Z Nismo to shame.
The cheap Supra offered a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. 255 horsepower instead of the 3.0-liter inline-six’s 382 hp and the Nissan Z’s 400 hp starting point. It’s tough to convince people to pay more money for less power in a similar format, making it one of the reasons to choose the Z over the Toyota, something that’s going to get even harder now that the four-pot is gone. The Z is now more than $13,000 cheaper than a less powerful Supra.
Sales charts make it look like Nissan’s plan to reuse much of the old 370Z in the new car seems to have been the right one. Keeping power output high and costs down looks to have given it the edge over the GR Supra. Toyota might not be too concerned, since it moved 11,426 copies of the GR86 coupe last year, but America seems to be falling out of love with that, too.
