With the price of everything seeming to have increased, a good pillow can cost upwards of £60, with premium options being even more pricey. This means that for homes with multiple beds, the cost of pillows can soon mount up.
And although pillows will eventually need to be replaced, there’s one simple hack to increase their lifespan. Adeel Ul-Haq, bedroom expert at DivanBeds.com, explains that there’s a simple £6.99 hack that will save your pillows from the bin. He said: “Your pillows naturally over time will lose their shape and with that goes any support that they were offering.
“Pillows lose their shape due to constant use and a build-up of moisture, but before you rush out to buy new ones, try putting them in a tumble dryer with a couple of clean tennis balls, which will beat them back into shape.”
The tennis ball hack
Start by putting one or two pillows in a tumble dryer and two tennis balls that should be placed in a clean sock tied at the top.
As the dryer spins around, the tennis balls will bounce around, beating the pillow and stuffing it back into shape.
“The movement of the tennis balls helps move the filling back to its original shape and restore fluffiness without damaging the fabric,” said Adeel. “It’s a little trick that you can use to help you get a better sleep and keep more money in your pocket.”
Adeel warns that when using the tennis ball method, you should ensure you’re using a low-heat setting, explaining: “Run on a low heat setting and make sure that your pillows dry thoroughly, otherwise you could allow mildew to form in your pillows.”
The expert adds that caring for your pillows, prior to them needing the tennis ball method, is also pivotal to ensuring they last as long as possible.
Adeel concluded: “Most synthetic and down pillows can be safely washed on a gentle cycle with warm water and detergent.
“I’d always recommend washing two pillows at a time to keep the drum balanced. Once washed, always dry on a low heat setting. You should wash your pillows every three to six months to get rid of oils, dust and sweat.”
“If you take care of your pillows you should be able to make them last for up to two years.”
