The Hyundai Casper Cross Is An Adorable Inster For The Home Market

Hyundai pulled the sheets of its newest product for the South Korean Market, the cloyingly cute Casper Electric Cross. If the micro-sized crossover looks familiar, that’s because it’s all but identical to the Inster Cross that we’ve seen before, which is destined for the garages of entry-level shoppers in Europe. Chunky black cladding, a revised front bumper, and unique six-spoke wheels differentiate the Casper Cross from its siblings. Although not destined for the US, we still think the Casper Electric Cross would be a pretty appealing entry-level alternative to the Kona Electric and Ioniq 5.

It’s An Appearance Package (And A Darn Good One)

The Casper Electric Cross includes some features and specifications that are optional on other members of the EV family. A 49-kilowatt-hour nickel-cobalt-manganese battery is standard, rather than the base 42-kWh unit. LED headlights and 17-inch wheels are also standard, leveling the Cross up a bit from other Casper Electric trims. However, despite the rugged-looking exterior, it has the same mechanicals as its siblings, meaning front-wheel drive and a decidedly compact-car ride height.

Still, the alterations take the already adorable Casper Electric to a new level of cuteness. Especially in the Cross-specific Amazonas Green Matte paint, it looks a bit like a dinghy that might hang off the back of a GMC Hummer EV. Hyundai will offer the Casper Electric Cross with a handful of rugged-looking accessories, including a roof basket that looks ready to take on Anza-Borrego. Thanks to its tall, narrow stance, the Casper Electric Cross has room inside for four people in a color-coordinated cabin. Especially in the two-tone Amazonas Green and black upholstery, the Cross’ interior is characterful and appealing.

A Short Little Crossover For Short Little Trips

With that 49-kWh battery sending power to a 113-horsepower front electric motor, the Casper Electric Cross can go 285 kilometers (177 miles) on a single charge, down a few ticks from the 183 miles that lesser Casper Electrics can go with the same battery. Still, for a car designed primarily for the urban jungle, we doubt many Casper Cross owners will complain too much about the city car’s range.

The Hyundai Casper Electric Cross carries a starting price of 31.9 million South Korean won, which converts to $21,950 in American coinage. That’s about three grand more than the most basic Casper Electric, which seems like a reasonable premium for the added content and style on offer. Still, all this dreaming is moot, as it seems increasingly unlikely that Hyundai will offer the Casper Electric (or its European Inster twin) in the United States at any price. Hopefully the rest of the world realizes what they’ve got.
