Toyota 4Runner Loses Major Ground In 2025… To Another Toyota
Much has been made of the Toyota Land Cruiser sharing the same platform as the new 4Runner, meaning there’s a lot less to differentiate the models. In essence, the Land Cruiser can now be simplified to being a more luxurious 4Runner rather than its own beast. Whether this is a good or bad thing is up to you, but it seems to be paying off for Toyota in some ways, while hurting it in others. According to Toyota’s sales figures for 2025, the more expensive and premium-featured off-roader has sold more units than the less expensive rough-and-tumble SUV.

But Not By Many
The difference in sales of the 4Runner versus the Land Cruiser for 2025 so far is just 93 deliveries. Toyota has sold 24,358 4Runners so far compared to 24,451 Land Cruisers. In the same bracket, the Toyota Sequoia has recorded 10,096 sales. However, the 4Runner sold 6,662 units in May versus the Land Cruiser’s 4,508. This makes sense as the 2025 Land Cruiser was hyped as a return to the US market, while the 4Runner is a solid staple of the US market.
But looking at 2025 YTD sales vs 2024’s sales figures at the same point in time, it’s abundantly clear there is cannibalization within Toyota’s off-roader ranks. After 5 months in 2025, the 4Runner had sold 57,010 units, meaning anything the Land Cruiser has gained has come directly from the 4Runner pool. There are a variety of factors to consider here, though, like end-of-generation specials in 2024 driving sales for the old 4Runner before it was replaced. We also doubt the cheaper off-roader will continue to sell fewer for much longer, and by year-end, it’s likely the 4Runner will see sales surge.
Let’s Go, Taco!
The other big winner for Toyota this year is the new iteration of the Tacoma pickup truck. It’s sold a whopping 109,365 units in 2025 already, and almost exactly double the amount sold year-to-date in 2024. Meanwhile, the Tundra still lumbers on fairly consistently with 63,532 so far in 2025 compared to 65,451 by this time in 2024. Toyota is winning with the Tacoma, but it still has a lot of work to do in the full-size truck market to compete at the top with Ford and Chevrolet.

Not So Great For The Sports Cars
So far, Toyota has only sold 4,618 GR 86 models and a shockingly low 923 Toyota Supra models. Last year, 5,967 GR 86s found owners while 1,223 Supras hit the US roads.. But the GR86 is still outselling its core rival. Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the automotive spectrum, the Prius has quietly gone about selling 30,161 units, double the year-to-date figure from 2024 and despite losing relevance. This, we believe, reinforces the idea of more frugal buyers and Toyota’s push to hybrid is the right move. It may even be that Toyota pushing the Camry and RAV4 to hybrid drivetrains has helped the Prius by raising awareness of Toyota’s hybrid lineage. That’s some food for thought.

Toyota’s Alternative Fuels Sales Woes
Toyota hasn’t fully committed to all-electric, but its only all-electric vehicle, the bZ4X (rechristened the bZ for 2026), has sold 8,026 units. You may have forgotten about the hydrogen-powered Mirai, but it still sold 39 units. That’s compared to 225 in 2024, and not a surprise as hydrogen stations have been closing. The Toyota Crown, the premium upgrade to the Camry and replacement for the Avalon that arrived in the US in 2022, hasn’t made a huge mark with 4,132 sold versus 12,539 by this time in 2024. At the same time, the Sienna minivan is going great guns in 2025 with 44,417 units sold in 2025 over 27,449 in 2024.

Not Forgetting The Big Guns
Predictably, the RAV4, Corolla, and Camry have been steady big sellers. The RAV4 has logged 202,641 units sold this year, just a few hundred less than by this time in 2024. It’s the same story for the Corolla, but with 101,390 sold in 2025 so far, then the Camry with 129,995 sold.
