Watch as ‘5 years’ of extractor fan grease comes off

A cooker hood has an extractor fan to remove steam, grease and cooking odours when you make a meal.

When the extractor fan is clogged with a build up of grease, condensation is more likely to occur in the kitchen, which can lead to the development of mould.

Not only that, the kitchen might start to smell funny if you don’t have a clean extractor fan. This appliance can only function effectively if it is kept clean and free from grease.

Two clear signs that it’s time to clean your extractor fan are lingering smells and accumulating condensation in your kitchen.

On the Mrs Hinch Army Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one woman sought advice on cleaning the cooker hood’s extractor fans – and she received numerous responses.

Sharing a picture of the yellow-stained extractor fan filters, the woman pleaded: “Please can you Hinchers help me on how to clean our extractor fan filters?

“Please don’t judge at the state of them we are in a rental property and haven’t been here that long!”

Some members suggested using Elbow Grease baking soda or washing-up liquid, although both methods require some scrubbing.

Instead, another Mrs Hinch fan proposed a natural tip that doesn’t involve the usual white vinegar and baking soda combination to remove the grease.

For this technique, all you need is some tin foil and soda crystal – either in powder or liquid form. The commentator advised: “Line your sink with foil, shiny side up, add soda crystals and warm water then put your filters in.

“They come out grease-free in five minutes. You can see here it worked on my filters that hadn’t been cleaned for five years!”

Intrigued by the hack for cleaning extractor fans, another member queried: “Why do you need foil?”

The person who recommended the tip responded: “The foil reacts with the soda crystals so all the grease comes away and attaches itself to the foil.”
