WATCH: Hydrogen Combustion Race Engine Sounds Like A Furious Alternative To EVs
There’s more to this engine than just the sound. According to the company, the hydrogen-powered mill makes 405 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque between 3,000 to 4,000 rpm. That’s around 203 hp per liter – which ridicules the Bugatti Chiron’s specific power output (power per liter).
Race cars pretty much run flat out, or close to it, for extended periods, increasing the risk of overheating and engine damage, with premature detonation a strong possibility in hydrogen engines. AVL is combating that with the use of an intelligent PFI water injection, which injects additional water into the engine’s intake air to prevent such a problem.
