10 Reasons The F-150 Lobo Is The Coolest Looking Truck We’ve Seen In A While

If you like the mean, streetwise look of the Ford Maverick Lobo, then you’re already a fan of lead exterior automotive designer Josh Blundo, who also handled the visual design of the forthcoming Ford F-150 Lobo. Blundo has drawn on his own passion for street truck culture to create what may be his masterpiece in one of the coolest-looking full-size pickups we’ve ever seen.

Our first impression of the Ford truck: it looks like you took an STX and dressed it up in tacticool SWAT team gear. When you take a moment to really study the pictures, though, you find that Blundo didn’t really change all that much about the F-150 to create a distinctive full-size Lobo. In going for a “sinister” appearance, Blundo practiced a less-is-more approach, and the devil turned out to be in the details. Here’s what we mean:

The following is based primarily on information and images released by Ford. Any opinions offered thereupon are those of the author unless otherwise attributed.

1

The New Grille Makes A Statement

It Serves A Performance Function, Too, But Mainly It Looks Awesome

Aesthetically speaking, the centerpiece of the Lobo package is the new grille. This is the biggest and most noticeable tweak, and it’s paired with a pretty tough-looking bonnet-style hood with some nice, crisp linework, allowing the Lobo to stand apart from the STX at a glance. We dig the utilitarian look of the lower grille, especially, and we think Blundo has done a fine job of echoing the Maverick Lobo’s front-end without repeating it.

The Lower Suspension Offers Instant Street Cred

The Back End Has Been Dropped Two Inches For Better Handling

Ford

In terms of performance specs and internal components, the F-150 Lobo is mostly comprised of stuff you could already get with an STX:

Engine

5.0-Liter NA 8-Cylinder

Power

400 hp

Torque

410 lb-ft

Transmission

10-Speed Automatic

Drivetrain

All-Wheel Drive

But, the F-150 Lobo’s rear suspension has been dropped two inches, creating a subtle but noticeable difference in appearance and handling, offering quicker acceleration and faster stops, as you would expect from a street truck. The lower suspension seems to follow a general design philosophy of building a street truck that’s not too showy, unless you know what you’re looking for.

The Paint Options Bring An Understated Toughness

Even Though We’ve Only Seen It In Black

Ford

The promotional images Ford is sending out feature the car in what appears to be the Agate Black Metallic exterior color. This is one of five colors, with the others being Atlas Blue Metallic, Carbonized Gray, Oxford White, and Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat. In Agate Black, the truck looks like it was carved out of a chunk of Obsidian, and we expect this to be the Lobo’s signature color.

4

Those All-Black Wheels Remind Us Of The Batmobile

It’s Only Missing The Self-Driving Feature From The Tim Burton Movie

Completing the all-black look, you’ve got a set of twenty-two-inch gloss-black wheels. If Michael Keaton’s Batman drove a pickup instead of a supercar, we’re pretty sure the Batmobile would look exactly like this. With these wheels and the Agate Black Metallic color selected, you’ve basically got a mean-looking blackout package on your hands, with everything but the lugnuts looking like midnight.

Completing the distinctive look for the front-end, the Lobo’s headlights have been given a streamlined redesign, creating this slick all-white horizontal bar of light running from corner to corner.

Now that both electric pickups have been on sale for a while, which one comes out on top?

Blundo has stated that he didn’t want to create some retro throwback, but a street truck for the modern age, and there’s nowhere that this is more apparent than in the exterior lights, as the Lobo looks more like a sibling to the forward-thinking F-150 Lightning than it does to the to lowered C/Ks and F-Series we saw growing up.

Check Out That Dual Exhaust

An Option On The STX, But Much Cooler-Looking In All-Black

2025 Ford F-150 Lobo

Ford

The dual exhaust is an option on the standard F-150 STX, but it looks a lot cooler here, appearing less like one of several viable options, and more integrated into the overall design. We haven’t seen it on the red or white models, but, in all-black, the dual exhaust looks like it belongs here. We also like how the all-black exhausts match the other black accents. Speaking of which:

Black Vents And Badging Complete The Stealth Jet Look

It’s Shaping Up To Look A Bit Like A B-2 Spirit

This is why we’re saying that an all-black look feels like the most sensible choice for Lobo buyers. Look, it’s your truck, if you want it in Atlas Blue, don’t let us talk you out of it. But when this thing is decked out in black from tip to tail, it looks like a stealth fighter jet on four wheels. The vents look especially cool paired with the crisp, tidy line work of the bonnet hood.

8

The All-Black Interior Looks Like A Command Center

This Looks Like The Perfect Setting To Enjoy A Late Night Run To Taco Bell

Ford

Exhibit C in our case for going with a blackout look when you buy the Ford F-150 Lobo. Like many other options, the black interior is already available on a standard STX, but it just looks right in the cabin of this Lobo. The press kit doesn’t say anything about ambient interior lighting, but we wouldn’t mind seeing how this cabin looks with some subtle splashes of pale blue here and there.

9

The Truck Even Sounds Cool

We Suspect Josh Blundo Has A Music Theory Degree He’s Not Telling Us About

We only get a one-second tease of the exhaust note at the tail end of the promotional video Ford just released, but we like what we hear. Blundo states that giving the truck a “V8 sound and performance” was key to creating something that would instantly identify the Lobo as a street truck, and we can’t wait to hear it tear up a quarter mile.

Rival EVs from Audi and BMW will charge much less for similar upgrades.

The fact that some special attention was paid to the sound of the truck is just another example of Blundo’s attention to detail. It’s not about building a new F-150 from the ground up, but bringing out the attitude that was already there.

10

They Didn’t Fix What Wasn’t Broke

The 14th-Gen F-150 Is Already A Good-Looking Truck, Blundo Just Touched It Up

Ford has typically been a brand that doesn’t swing for the fences when it comes to visual design. The fourteenth-generation Ford F-Series is a refinement of more than seventy years of pickups that have been a cornerstone of the American highway for longer than the vast majority of us have been alive.

It’s fun to imagine what a really wild, radical redesign would look like, but we’ll leave that to the aftermarket, because that wouldn’t really be on-brand for the automaker. The fact of the matter is that the 2025 F-150 is already a very handsome truck. Blundo’s job wasn’t to redesign the wheel, but to take the rugged lines and macho profile of the top-selling pickup, and just make it look a little more wicked. We say he aced that test with flying colors.
