Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 (2017 to 2018)

New GLS 63s will still command a steep price, but if you find a 2017 or 2018 version, you will see that they have now slipped under the $30,000 mark. Yes, these are likely to be high-mileage versions, but you’re getting plenty of vehicle for that money. This particular SUV is basically the successor to the AMG GL 63, and it has the same M157 V8, but now with 577 hp. Inside the GLS 63, you’ll notice slightly updated styling and a better infotainment system than the others, but essentially, it’s just as plush as you might expect, with standard seven-passenger seating. It also has multi-contour front seats with a massage function, rear seat entertainment, and the option to heat those back row seats. With your feet hard to the floor, you will reach sixty in 4.5 seconds, which is quite amazing for a vehicle that could carry your three kids, the in-laws, and all their luggage in comfort. Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG (2012 to 2015)

The GL 63 AMG was once the flagship performance SUV in the German manufacturer’s lineup. It first appeared in 2012 as the AMG rendition of the GL-Class, and it’s a full-size SUV with a handcrafted motor. The M157 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 generates 550 hp and pulls with 560 lb.-ft of torque. Even though it weighs more than 5500 lbs., it’ll still get you to sixty in less than five seconds, which is pretty good going for a seven-seater. And it provides you with a great soundtrack as it’s doing so, with a deep and throaty bellow emanating from the exhaust.

On board the GL63 you’ll find S-Class levels of comfort, with high-grade materials, Designo leather in certain models and all the expected gadgetry. And in this vehicle, your third-row passengers won’t be an afterthought as they’ll have relatively easy access with lots of legroom. Standard equipment includes COMAND navigation, heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a premium audio system from Harman Kardon. Some versions will even have rear-seat entertainment systems to keep the kids happy on that long drive.

Today, you can find some GL 63s between $22,000 and $29,000 but expect up to six-figure mileage. Have a close look at the maintenance records though, and especially when it comes to the AIRMATIC suspension and bi-turbo system. But if you do find a good one, it represents one of the best values on the used market today, as a commanding and powerful three-row AMG.

Mercedes-AMG R63 (2007)

This one is a real unicorn as it only went on sale briefly in 2007, so you may have to dig deep to find one. The R63 was part of the ill-fated R-Class luxury people mover range, but this one had AMG’s legendary 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8, coded M156. It produced 503 hp and 465 lb.-ft of torque but fewer than 200 of these SUVs ever appeared in North America, making it one of the rarest AMG production vehicles of all.

From a distance, the R63 may look a little odd as it seems to be part wagon, part crossover, and part minivan. But there’s nothing odd about its acceleration as it will get you to the 60-mph threshold in 4.6 seconds, down to AMG’s tuning and its capable all-wheel drive system. Yes, there are three rows of seating and tons of cargo space, with interior appointments that are class standard. There’s a panoramic roof and heated and ventilated front and rear seats, and soft-closed doors come with the deal.

You may need to be patient, but you can find the occasional one for less than $30,000. Expect it to have high mileage and possibly a spotty history and bear in mind that enthusiasts and collectors are starting to search for these vehicles too. Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 (2021)

Some AMG SUVs come in smaller packages and the AMG GLB 35 is more of a compact crossover. It first appeared in 2020 and while it does have your expected onboard room, it also sports a small and city-friendly footprint. Under the hood, there’s a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder which AMG has breathed on to give you 302 hp and 295 lb.-ft of torque. It’s got an AMG-tuned 4MATIC all-wheel drive and an eight-speed dual clutch transmission too. While it doesn’t have the raw brutality of a V8, it’ll still get you there in style with fuel efficiency and those all-important AMG dynamics.

Now in a crossover, you can’t really expect ample space for third row passengers, and it’ll certainly be tight for adults. However, this is one of the only compact performance SUVs with seating for up to seven, so bear that in mind. Once everyone is on board, your getaway will be quick with a zero to sixty time of around 5.2 seconds. Technology-wise, the GLB 35 has all the modern features, including MBUX Voice Assistant, a fully digital instrument cluster, and driver assist aids like lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control. Due to the vehicle’s relatively boxy design, the cargo space is pretty good too.
