Nissan Leaf

The Nissan Leaf is now the only fully electric car you can buy new for the 2025 model year, with a starting price of $28,140. That price only gets you the base variant with 147 horsepower and a small 40-kWh battery that’s only enough for a 149-mile range. These numbers are outclassed by newer EVs, but they’re the sacrifices to make if you want a sub-$40k electric car.

Being an older design, the Nissan Leaf’s interior controls aren’t as alienating and tech-heavy as many other EVs, while the hatchback shape promotes good passenger and cargo space. For more senior buyers who can charge at home and only do a few in-city trips, the Leaf isn’t a bad option, but for most other needs, its poky performance and poor range limit its appeal.

Fisker Pear

Fisker’s financial troubles are now common knowledge, and it means models like the highly anticipated Pear will likely never make it to production. In the first quarter of 2024, it was confirmed that the Pear was delayed, followed a few months later by the news that the company had declared bankruptcy. The Pear was expected to arrive in the USA with a base price of $29,900, and it would’ve been even cheaper with federal incentives. The car has cute styling and was to offer a seating configuration for up to six people. Sadly, the Pear’s potential was never realized.

Another Cheap EV Option

If you’re willing to spend a little over $30k, you can drive off in the Hyundai Kona Electric, which starts at $32,975 and is a far more modern EV than the Leaf. This base Kona has a 200-mile range, a 133-hp motor, and standard features like a 12.3-inch touchscreen interface, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, blind-spot collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. If you’re considering the Leaf, we’d recommend stretching to the Kona if possible.

Alternatively, if you can’t find suitable new electric cars under 30k, a lightly used Kona Electric is a good option.
