There Are Only Two Ford Model Lines Left With A V8 Engine

These days, much of the automotive news is centered on electrification, hybridization, and smaller internal combustion engines with forced induction as part of a collective effort to wean the automobile off of dinosaur fuel. But that doesn’t mean the classic V8 engine is dead. Far from it, in fact, especially at Ford. Everyone knows the Mustang, the last pony car standing and with it, a potent Coyote option on the GT model. But spread out across the Blue Oval’s vast vehicle portfolio are a host of other V8s still on sale in 2024, from the Scorpion to the Predator and even Godzilla. But all these V8s are only spread across two model lines. Let’s take a look.
Ford
Ford is one of America’s oldest automakers and one of the oldest in the world, popularized for being the first to effectively mass produce the automobile under Henry Ford with the Ford Model T. In over 120 years, Ford has become a sales leader in a variety of segments, with popular nameplates like the Ford F-150, Transit, and Mustang.

The Legendary V8-Powered Mustang
The Ford Mustang and its V8 engine are as American as baseball and apple pie. Sure, you can buy a 2024 Mustang with a turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, but it’s just not the same as the V8; the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 to be exact – at least in GT and Dark Horse flavors. Don’t forget about the Mustang GTD, a different beast entirely, but one that still boasts V8 power.

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT packs the 4th-gen 5.0-liter Coyote V8, a naturally aspirated dual overhead cam mill good for 480 horsepower at 7,150 rpm and 415 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm. Tack on the active exhaust for $1,225 and output bumps to 486 hp. This all-aluminum V8 features Ford’s Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing and pairs with a Getrag 6-speed manual in standard spec or with an optional 10-speed automatic.

In track-ready Dark Horse form, the 2024 Mustang builds on the 5.0L V8 found in the GT with forged connecting rods, coolers for the engine oil, transmission, and differential along with a unique intake manifold and an exhaust sprouting quad four-inch tips at the end. Making an even 500 hp at 7,250 rpm, the Mustang Dark Horse is also fitted with a 6-speed stick, but an upgraded unit from Tremec. Like in the GT, the Coyote used in the Dark Horse has a bore of 3.66 inches and a stroke of 3.65 inches.

Technically street-legal, the moonshot Mustang GTD also features a V8, but it displaces 5.2 liters, is strapped with a supercharger, and is known as the “Predator.” Not to be confused with the free-breathing 5.2L Voodoo V8 and its flat-plane crank, this particular V8 saw prior duty in the Mustang GT500. However, in the GTD, it’s modified to make 815 hp at 7,650 rpm, has dry-sump lubrication, forged internals, and a special intake manifold.
GTD deliveries have yet to begin because development is still underway on the supercar-priced ‘Stang. But that development is mighty, with Multimatic handling much of it, including building a bespoke inboard suspension. If you think that’s overkill for a humble muscle car, you’d be wrong, because the GTD enters supercar territory, recently becoming the fastest American car around the Nurburgring and the first to achieve a sub-7-minute time at the Green Hell.

The Best-Selling Pickup Truck In America Is Still V8-Powered
Ford has come a long way on its EcoBoost journey as the 2024 F-150 currently offers its turbocharged six-cylinder engine in 2.7-, 3.5-, and 3.5-liter formats. However, for those who feel a pickup truck is not a pickup truck without a V8, the 5.0-liter Coyote is on hand, along with a few others in various iterations of the F-series, from F-150 right through to the heaviest-duty F-650 iterations.

The F-150 has been the best-selling pickup truck in America for nearly 50 years. It’s changed a lot in that time, but one constant has been an available V8 engine. As of 2024, the V8 in the core F-150 lineup has shrunk to just the Coyote, which puts out 400 hp in this application. Several turbocharged V6 engines are also offered, and there’s a hybrid too, but the V8 has pull over pickup traditionalists. It’s also the only way to get your hands on a back-to-basics F-150 with a regular cab at this point.

If the “regular” F-150 Raptor simply isn’t cutting it with just 450 horsepower from a twin-turbo V6, Ford has the Predator-powered Raptor R to state your desire for power. A truly incredible piece of engineering, the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 fitted to the 2024 Raptor R is tuned to make 720 hp at 6,650 rpm and 640 lb-ft of torque at 4,300 rpm – more power than a certain Ferrari. Running 12 psi of boost from its Eaton supercharger, this is the most powerful F-150 – ever.
When the Ram 1500 TRX was discontinued at the end of 2023, Ford could’ve left the Raptor R unchanged, but it gave it more power and made it even better off-road, which is why we crowned it the winner of the CarBuzz Off-Road Warrior award.

As others move away from the V8, the Raptor R is the last truck standing. And it’s better than ever.
As CarBuzz‘s Ian Wright said, “If you’ve driven the twin-turbo V6 Raptor, then you already know it has plenty of grunt on offer with torque to spare when you need it and horsepower for days. The supercharged V8 in the Raptor R is pure, unadulterated overkill and, we suspect, the last hurrah for outright gas-guzzling power for the Raptor. Of course, the supercharged V8 sounds spectacular, whether it’s being revved out in high-speed areas or using its grunt to clear steep obstacles.”
Over At Ford Super Duty, It’s Nothing But V8s
Ford may like to tout its fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid Escape and gas-free Mustang Mach-E, but when it comes to the Blue Oval’s heavy hitters – and company cash cows – it’s all about that gas- or diesel-guzzling V8. Currently, the F-250 and F-350 can be paired with a choice of gas-powered and naturally aspirated V8s or a boosted diesel known as PowerStroke with a lot of power or an absolutely outrageous level of juice in High Output guise.

The differences between a Ford F-250 and F-350 are a topic for another day, but one commonality is the engine choices for these two Super Duty trucks. Both have access to an identical lineup of four V8s, starting with the gas-powered 6.8-liter mill. It has a 4.22 in. bore and 3.68 in. stroke, runs a 10.8:1 compression ratio, and is good for 445 lb-ft of torque. Like all current Super Dutys, a 10-speed automatic is the only transmission offered with this V8.

Currently Ford’s biggest displacement production engine, the 7.3-liter V8 offered in the Super Duty lineup is fittingly named “Godzilla”. This pushrod behemoth arrived in 2020 with a cast iron block and a forged steel crankshaft. It matches the bore on its 6.8-liter brethren – which is a Godzilla relative – but stretches the stroke to 3.98 inches and features a 10.5:1 compression ratio.

Unsurprisingly, it is the diesel-powered V8s that are the torque champions of the Ford lineup today. Falling under the PowerStroke umbrella, this particular 6.7L turbodiesel V8 has been dubbed “Scorpion.” It features an overhead-valve design with a V configuration, a 36,000-psi fuel injection system, forged steel pistons, and a compacted graphite iron block. The 475-hp rating is impressive but pales in comparison to the 1,050 lb-ft of torque available at just 1,600 rpm.

It is truly amazing that in 2024, you can buy a giant pickup truck with a V8 engine that puts out 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque for less than $60,000. Granted, you can also spend a lot more than that on top-end Ford Super Duties with this most powerful of turbodiesel V8s, but still. Featuring unique exhaust manifolds, a higher displacement fuel pump, and an upgraded turbo, the High Output version of Ford’s 6.7L turbodiesel V8 is a modern marvel of automotive engineering.
