Ultimate Edition Honda Civic Type R Spells The End Of An Icon, But Don’t Panic
The current Honda Civic Type R, the FL5 to fans, was only launched in 2022, arriving in the U.S. as a 2023 model. However, Honda is already rolling out a special final edition of the car, signaling the end of an era for the dominant FWD hot hatch.
Known as the Civic Type R Ultimate Edition, the car at present is only destined for the European market, with just 40 build slots up for grabs. Buyers who miss out will still be able to opt for the standard Civic Type R in the Old Continent before sales wind up there sometime in 2026.

Regulations To Blame For Type R’s Early Death
Honda hasn’t said whether it plans a similar final edition for the U.S., though given the typical five-year lifecycle for its products, the Civic Type R in its current form should remain on sale here at least through the 2027 model year.
Over in Europe, the automaker is committed to exclusively selling hybrids and electric vehicles as soon as the end of 2025, which is part of the reason it is dropping the Civic Type R there. Another reason is the changing regulatory environment, Honda Europe’s head of European strategy and product, Hannah Swift, said in a statement:
“As we say farewell to a true icon of the Honda automobile line-up in Europe, we thought it was fitting to give the Civic Type R the ultimate send-off with this special edition model offering our customers a unique opportunity to celebrate its legacy. The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation. However, Type R has always been Honda’s ultimate expression of our passion for driving excitement, and we look forward to celebrating its heritage in the weeks and months ahead.”

The Civic Type R Ultimate Edition, which comes exclusively finished in white, stands out with its contrasting black roof, red stripe package (on the hood and doors), and carbon-fiber rear wing. Inside, more carbon is found on the center console panel, as well as the door sill treadplates, and Honda also adds a distinctive Type R logo for the puddle lamps. Each of the cars also comes with a serialized gift box containing a carbon key ring.

No changes have been made to the mechanical package. The Civic Type R makes do with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4, rated at 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mounted up front and drives the front wheels only, via a 6-speed manual transmission. The combination was enough to earn the car the lap record for a production front-wheel-drive car at the Nürburgring, with a time of 7:43.8 clocked in 2023, albeit with a special model used for that run.
Electrification Likely For Next-Gen Civic Type R
The Civic Type R isn’t likely to be absent in Europe for long. While Honda hasn’t addressed plans for the next generation of the car, an electrified powertrain is almost certain. Senior Honda executives hinted at the possibility of an electric Civic Type R as recently as the start of this year, though given the automaker’s recent shift toward hybrids, a gas engine paired with an electrical system is more likely than a purely electric setup.
In May, Honda said it was scaling back its investments in EVs and would instead focus on hybrids for the near-to-mid term. This new focus will include the launch of 13 vehicles featuring a next-generation hybrid system from 2027. One of these could potentially be the next Civic Type R.
